About the Author

My name is Leona Sears, psychologist and Director of Anger Therapy London. I have worked with people accused of domestic abuse, as well as victims, for over 18 years. This article is based on my clinical experience.

Having worked with clients with Anger Management issues in both group therapy and one-to-one sessions, I quickly realised that although group therapy has some benefits, when it comes to a Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programme, I am a strong advocate of individual sessions.

Why I Prefer Individual Therapy

In my clinical experience, clients attending a group Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programme do not gain the same level of insight as those attending one-to-one sessions. In a group, time has to be shared between several members, meaning not everyone has the opportunity to discuss their individual circumstances. Many clients also present with court findings, Cafcass issues and safeguarding concerns that cannot be explored in sufficient depth.

In my experience, group programmes are not designed to explore the underlying causes of each client’s Anger Management issues. Instead, they focus on educating clients about domestic abuse and its impact, leaving little opportunity to address the individual factors that contributed to the behaviour. As a result, clients with long-standing Anger Management difficulties may not receive the depth of work they need.

Benefits of One-to-One Anger Management

For this reason, I support one-to-one Anger Management sessions. They allow clients to reflect on their behaviour, discover the factors that contributed to the abuse and learn strategies to reduce the risk of it happening again. This process increases self-awareness and is tailored to the individual. Every client presents with a different history, personality, level of insight and risk factors, which is why I believe treatment should be tailored to the individual rather than delivered as a one-size-fits-all programme.

Progress Reports for Cafcass and the Courts

At the end of the programme, clients at Anger Therapy London can request a progress report that assists Cafcass, solicitors, barristers or the court in deciding whether they have engaged in a robust Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programme and gained insight and achieved change.

Programme Length

The programme at Anger Therapy London usually consists of 12 hours, although some clients require additional sessions because of language difficulties, limited insight or more complex needs. Clients with a criminal history, particularly repeated offending, often have more complex and long-standing issues that cannot usually be addressed within the same time-frame as short-term Anger Management difficulties and will need 24 hours.
