“Does anger management counselling work?” is a question that all of my new clients ask. If you are looking for anger management counselling, you may have the same question, and it deserves a proper answer.
CBT IS EFFECTIVE IN ANGER MANAGEMENT ISSUES REDUCTION
From my clinical experience, having worked with clients from many different nationalities and religions. and walks of life, I have come to realise that it does work. Research reviewing anger management programmes that use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), my favourite counselling modality, has also shown that it works. I don’t blame you if you are still not convinced, especially if you don’t work in this field. In 2001, before I started my undergraduate degree in Psychology, I also wondered whether it worked and whether I was investing my time and money wisely. My question was only answered through my own experience when I started my postgraduate clinical training and saw my clients thrive in front of my eyes. This was further confirmed when I set up my private practice and I have since been consistently receiving over the past 18 years positive reviews click here and then scroll down, which strengthened my belief that it does work.
“50 studies evidenced efficacy of CBT in reduction of anger management issues”
f you are not convinced, perhaps you will also have to take a risk and try it for yourself. Until then, here are a few studies that support my experience. If you have studied research, you will know that for something to be statistically valid, research studies must consistently produce the same results, and only then does it become an accepted theory. So, my number one piece of evidence that anger management using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works comes from a 1998 meta-analysis by Beck and Fernandez. In this study, 50 studies involving 1,640 participants were analysed to determine whether anger management using CBT was effective. The results showed moderate to large reductions in anger.Another meta-analysis, published in 2004 by Del Vecchio and O’Leary, also found that CBT-based interventions in anger treatment were effective, and these findings were further supported by DiGiuseppe and Tafrate (2003).
“Factor in practitioners with a proven track record in anger management and a passion for CBT“
I would also say that, in order to find a good practitioner, you should look for evidence that they have experience working with anger management issues and are passionate about using CBT. Simply mentioning CBT on a website is not enough.I have previously worked with clients who had seen inexperienced practitioners, and they reported that the experience made them feel worse.
